Boeing and MSC Air Cargo have announced that the fast-growing air cargo operator has purchased five 777-8 Freighters.
The previously unidentified order represents MSC Air Cargo’s first order for the 777-8 Freighter. The aircraft will be part of the 777X family and will incorporate advanced technologies alongside customer-preferred features from the current-generation 777 Freighter.
Jannie Davel, CEO of MSC Air Cargo, said the order represents an investment in the long-term future of MSC Air Cargo and the customers it serves. He added that the 777-8 Freighter will provide the efficiency, range and capacity needed to reliably serve customers while supporting the company’s commitment to more sustainable operations.
The 777-8 Freighter offers high payload capability alongside low fuel use, emissions and operating costs per tonne among large freighters. Widebody freighters currently account for approximately 75% of global air cargo capacity, while the air freight sector is expected to play an important role in the coming decades as e-commerce continues to grow.
Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, said MSC Air Cargo is investing in its future with the order for large widebody freighter aircraft, which will enhance the capability and reach of its global air network.
McMullen added that the 777-8 Freighter will be the most efficient aircraft in its class and will connect MSC Air Cargo’s hubs with key international markets.
Boeing has booked more than 80 orders for the 777-8 Freighter, with MSC Air Cargo becoming the third Europe-based air cargo operator to order the aircraft.
