Mehler Develops Close-Range Counter-UAS System for Land Vehicles

MEHLER Vario Systems is developing a close-range counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) specifically designed for integration on land vehicles, offering enhanced protection for mobile units against small, low-altitude drone threats.

The new system focuses on short-range detection and defeat of unmanned aerial systems in vehicle-borne operations. As drones become more prevalent in military and security environments — including reconnaissance, target acquisition and disruptive missions — the need for protective systems that can move with ground forces has become more urgent. Mehler’s solution aims to fill this capability gap by providing a lightweight, adaptable C-UAS package that can be mounted on tactical vehicles without significantly impacting mobility or mission profiles.

A core element of the system is its combined sensor and effector architecture. Compact radar and electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors provide real-time situational awareness of low-altitude airspace surrounding the vehicle. These sensors feed data into an integrated processing unit that tracks and classifies aerial contacts, enabling rapid decision support for operators or autonomous engagement sequences where permitted. By focusing on close-range airspace, the system is tailored to respond quickly to drones approaching from multiple vectors, including urban or restricted terrain.

Mehler’s design emphasises modularity and ease of integration. The system can be adapted to different vehicle classes — from light armoured personnel carriers to heavier platforms — and is intended to complement broader vehicle protection suites. Its modular nature allows individual components to be updated or replaced as technology evolves or mission requirements change.

The C-UAS solution also incorporates mitigation measures that align with operational safety considerations. Depending on rules of engagement and local regulations, the system may employ non-kinetic techniques such as radio frequency disruption or employ precision effectors to neutralise threats effectively while minimising collateral risk. This makes the platform suitable for operations near civilian areas where explosive defeat methods may pose unacceptable hazards.

By focusing on vehicle-mounted, close-range counter-drone capability, Mehler is addressing a growing operational need among ground forces and security units for mobile airspace defence. The company’s development reflects wider trends toward layered protection concepts in which short, medium and long-range systems operate together to provide comprehensive airspace safety. As unmanned systems continue to proliferate, especially in contested and congested environments, vehicle-integrated C-UAS solutions like Mehler’s are expected to play an increasing role in protecting mobile units and supporting mission success.
